Phineas is a pig with an eye to adventure; when he is on one of his
adventures he loves to have some company, because having an
adventure on your own is not the same thing at all.
As the day is rather nice, he decides he would really, really love to have a mud puddle adventure so sets
out to recruit all of his friends to come along with him. He talks to Lillian Cow, Charlie Sheep, Harley Dog,
even to Olivia Owl and Maxwell Cat who all decide that they will join him on his adventure; at least at the
moment they will!
The book has been well designed to appeal to a wide range of children and their reading levels as the
words are clear and well used. Interesting formations add a little bit more of a puzzle, or adventure, to
following the friends trail as they head on out looking for the very best mud puddle.
It is also a good story to read with little ones as the illustrations are clear and each animal can be easily
recognised as animals that could be found in a farm yard.
The underlying story woven into the more traditional story of friends out to enjoy the day and the moment
is, that no matter how hard you try, things don’t always work out the way you wanted them to, but you
can still enjoy the moment and still have fun with your friends.
This is the first in a series of children’s books by Julie Robertson and Sharon Perry featuring the Bobson
Farm Gang. It will be a series to watch out for as the subject matter of friendship and what makes a true
friend is one that has been covered well with Phineas and his friends.
It will be interesting to find out what Phineas and his friends choose to learn about next!
